Road accidents have become a grave concern in Sri Lanka, with a steady rise in fatalities and injuries. The recent news report highlights the severity of the issue, as 14 people lost their lives in road accidents in just nine days in four different areas of the island. The data from the beginning of 2023 indicates a disturbing toll of 1192 deaths and 1126 fatal accidents. Empowering Youth in Agriculture: Unleashing Potential Amid Challenges
Introduction
Recently, at the Eastern University Sri Lanka, an inspiring
discussion on the future of labor in the agriculture sector among youth shed
light on the pressing challenges faced by our society. This article aims to
delve into these challenges and explore the potential solutions that can pave
the way for a brighter future. In a world grappling with food security
concerns, high youth unemployment rates, lack of awareness, economic
bankruptcy, and political instability, it is essential to focus on revitalizing
the agriculture sector and empowering our youth.
Challenges to Food
Security
Ensuring food security is a global concern, and Sri Lanka is no exception. Rising population, climate change, and limited agricultural productivity pose significant challenges to sustaining food production. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches that engage the younger generation in agricultural practices. By encouraging youth to embrace modern techniques and technology, we can enhance productivity and meet the increasing food demands of our nation.

Gender Equality and Climate Adaptability in Sri Lanka: Building a Resilient and Inclusive Future
Climate change is a pressing global challenge that demands immediate
action. While reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial, we must also
address the impacts of climate change that are already affecting communities
around the world. In this article, we will explore the importance of gender
equality and climate adaptability in Sri Lanka, considering the unique
vulnerabilities faced by different groups. By incorporating a gender-responsive
approach and ensuring inclusivity, we can foster resilience and create a more
equitable society.
Understanding the
Intersectionality of Climate Change
Climate change affects people differently based on their geographical location, livelihoods, and social roles within their communities. It is essential to recognize that climate change is not solely an environmental issue but also a justice issue. Often, those who have contributed least to climate change are the ones who suffer the most from its consequences. In the Paris Agreement of 2015, the international community acknowledged the importance of gender equality, women's empowerment, and climate action that is responsive to gender needs.

Can Government Welfare Schemes in Sri Lanka Overcome Inefficiencies and Discrepancies?
The government has implemented various social
welfare schemes in Sri Lanka, such as Janasaviya, Samurdhi, and the latest
initiative, Aswesuma. Unfortunately, these programs have faced numerous issues
related to discrepancies and inefficiencies. Aswesuma, a poverty relief
program, was introduced under the International Monetary Fund's (IMF)
recommendations. This article aims to explore the current system's shortcomings
and propose suggestions for improvement.
The Aswesuma Welfare
Benefit Program
President Ranil Wickremesinghe initiated the Aswesuma welfare benefits program as part of the social safety net to address the ongoing economic crisis. The program operates under the supervision of the State Minister of Finance Semasinghe and involves various government agencies, including the Ministry of Finance. It aims to provide financial assistance to the lower-income group, comprising 40% of society, across four categories: transitional, vulnerable, poor, and extremely poor. Families falling into the inferior category are targeted to receive a monthly allowance of Rs. 15,000. Additionally, the program includes subsidies for differently-abled individuals, the elderly, and kidney patients.
Promoting Education and Rural Development in Batticaloa: A Journey of Empowerment
Visiting underprivileged rural areas and meeting vulnerable
children can be a transformative experience. In Batticaloa, a region in Sri
Lanka struggling with low education rates, I embarked on a mission to
understand the challenges faced by the community and empower them for a
brighter future. Through immersive research and collaboration with local
organizations, I realized the significance of education in bridging the gap
between rural and urban Sri Lanka. In this article, we will explore the
importance of education, the need for rural development, and the role of
volunteers in uplifting disadvantaged communities.
Understanding the Low
Education Rate
Batticaloa, like many other rural regions, grapples with a low education rate due to various factors. Lack of resources, inadequate infrastructure, poverty, and prevailing social issues contribute to limited access to quality education. By delving into the community and befriending the people, I sought to uncover the root causes of this educational disparity.

Breaking Barriers: Empowering Women in Sri Lanka's Workforce
A: Certainly. Even though women make up 52%
of Sri Lanka's population, their participation in the labour market has remained
dishearteningly low, ranging from 30% to 37% for over a decade. Outdated and
restrictive labour laws, particularly those concerning working times for women,
play a significant role in hindering their employment prospects. These laws
limit the hours during which women can work, creating barriers that discourage
employers from hiring women and preventing women from working for longer hours
to earn a better income.
Q: Could you provide specific examples of these
labour laws that restrict women's working times?
A: Yes, several laws impose restrictions. The Shop and Office Employees Act, Employment of Women, Young Persons and Children Act, and Factories Ordinance, for instance, place limits on a woman's right to engage in night work. In most industries, women over 18 can only work until 8 pm, and in certain sectors like hotels and tourism, the cutoff time is 10 pm. These restrictions not only limit women's earning potential but also act as a reason for employers to prefer male candidates over equally qualified female candidates. As a result, women's representation in leadership roles, even in office work, remains significantly low.
