The community from Kalmunai-1B in the Ampara District on the Eastern cost of Sri Lanka is in disaster prone area which is identified with assessment of UNDP-DMC as a most vulnerable Grama Niladary division. The participants were looking us with the pitiable because they had a bad experience in the tidal wave in 2004; we could found it that they are remembering still their valuable lives and assets they lost by poor disaster management system in Sri Lanka those days.

We was conducting the Community based disaster management mapping (CBDMM) in a Kalmunai-01B, there are around 900 families living, most of them are fisherman and laborers. We were able to see the beauty of the sea around the area but the people still cry for their loved once the sea took away in Tsunami.
70% of the participant is female, as usual a common awareness programme was conducted and group discussion, group presentation followed. Participant actively participated in the Community based disaster management mapping and proceeded. They were drawing the Community based disaster management mapping with the help of GN, SSO, Religious leader and Samurthi officer.A old woman speaking of the days gone by states “The community suffer many hardships during the disaster as there were no proper early warning, evacuation paths, awareness and proper infrastructure, but now we feel lucky because UNDP-DMC strengthen us towards safer future”.

Miss S.Sinthujah a grade ten students made presentation with the help of Community based disaster management mapping, at this point “if their family member had gone through the correct root could have been saved, also said that this programme had taught them many life saving methods, they aware as to where to go and to find safe place during disaster”
“I think, UNDP-DMC’s funding for this valuable programme is A Genuine Corner Stone for a safer Ampara” The GN said heartily the true and expensive words in the end of the programe.
