Road to New Life

Ninthavur is a beautiful village in the costal area in Ampara District. In the eastern side is surrounded the sea and western side has many cultivation lands.

So far the eastern cost has experiences in many natural disasters reason being way of Bengal is close to Sri Lanka. Moreover Disaster in Sumatra Island is also effected Sri Lanka. In 1978 the eastern Sri Lanka faced the huge cyclone, in 1956 flood and in 2004 tsunami caused many difficulties and took away thousands of lives and destroyed life style of many many families. Dissemination of community based disaster management map by DMC-UNDP  into identified 30 most vulnerable local residents is usually adequate as a means of raising awareness of actual disaster reduction activities at the community level in Ampara.

During the community based disaster management mapping, I met a 64 years old man Mr.Meerashaheep from Ninthavur-06. He said I have experience cyclone, flood & tsunami disaster and I have seen problems faced by the people due to those disasters. Many of our Muslim female who had lived indoor always, had no courage to fight against problems like running away, climbing trees, walls and swimming. They even don’t know the safety roots   because of these hundred of Muslim women lost of their lives in these disasters. But I also only now came to know ways to escape from disaster, if we had aware these methods earlier many of our people could have been safe”

While we were discussing about the mapping, a lady Miss Fathima age 28 years old she said “ I feel sorry we were not aware life safe ways before, our parents never  let us to go and learn outside, if we had known this earlier it could have been helpful but now our parents want to go and learn this. By this community based disaster management mapping many families could be safe from disaster so I think this is the road to new life”
