In the face of a mounting dengue epidemic, Sri Lanka stands at the forefront of a significant health crisis. With a staggering 73,601 suspected cases reported in November 2019 alone, the threat has reached unprecedented levels, particularly in regions like Batticaloa within the Eastern Province. As the monsoon rains exacerbate the situation, the Eastern University Alumni Association has risen, taking a proactive stance to combat this menacing health crisis.
Initiated on November 22, 2019, the Eastern University alumni association embarked on targeted campaigns in the worst-affected areas of the Batticaloa district. Their primary goal is to ignite awareness and galvanize the community in the fight against dengue.
The project's first phase involved engaging students in
Palugamam, Thikodai, Tumpankeni, and Thumpankeny schools. In the second phase,
the campaign extended its reach to the students of Karadianaru school. Teachers
and principals were pivotal in executing the awareness campaign diligently and
passionately. Vital information on dengue prevention was disseminated, and
printed pamphlets detailing preventive measures were distributed, contributing
significantly to spreading essential knowledge.
Crucially, the success of this initiative was made possible
through the unwavering support of alumni from BC, who volunteered their time
and resources on a charitable basis. Their commitment and dedication exemplify
the collective spirit of the Eastern University alumni community, embodying the
principle that together, we can make a difference.
In the battle against dengue, awareness forms the first line
of defence. The Eastern University Alumni Association's concerted efforts
signify a commendable stride toward fostering a healthier, more informed
community. As they persist in championing this cause, their actions serve as a
beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative impact a united community can
have in safeguarding public health.
Conclusion: A Call to Youthful Vigilance
In conclusion, the fight against dengue is not merely a health campaign; it's a political act, a collective responsibility to protect the well-being of our community. The youth play a crucial role in this battle with their boundless energy and passion. We urge the young minds of Batticaloa to be vigilant, informed, and proactive in promoting a dengue-free environment. Let this campaign inspire, showing that each individual, especially the youth, can catalyse change. Social activist S.T. Seelan said, "Our strength lies in our unity, and our unity is the key to overcoming any challenge." Together, let us build a resilient and healthier tomorrow.
